8 Signs You Might Need a Hearing Test

Hearing loss often creeps up slowly, making it easy to miss early warning signs. Catching the problem early can make a big difference. Here are the signs you should not ignore:

  • People sound like they are mumbling.
  • If it often seems like others aren’t speaking clearly, the issue may not be their speech.

  • You misunderstand what people say.
  • Hearing parts of a sentence wrong can lead to awkward or confusing moments, especially if it happens often.

  • You struggle to hear conversations in noisy places (background noise).
  • Restaurants, cafés, and busy streets can become confusing if your ears aren’t picking up sounds properly, resulting in difficulty understanding in groups.

  • You turn the TV or radio up louder than others prefer.
  • If family members or friends complain about the volume.

  • You find phone calls harder to follow.
  • Phones cut out some sound frequencies. It may not be the phone’s fault if you’re struggling more than before.

  • You avoid social events (social isolation).
  • Choosing to stay home instead of joining friends.

  • You feel tired after conversations.
  • Working harder to listen and fill in gaps can leave you feeling drained.

  • Family or friends point out your hearing loss.
  • Loved ones often notice changes before you do.

About Melkbosstrand

Melkbosstrand is a quiet coastal village about 30 minutes north of Cape Town. Known for its long, sandy beaches and relaxed pace, it’s a popular spot for families, surfers, and anyone looking to escape the city without going too far. The beach stretches for kilometres, offering space for walks, picnics, and fishing. Its waves attract surfers, while the shallow areas are good for paddling and swimming.

The name “Melkbosstrand” comes from the milkwood trees that grow in the area. It’s a place where nature and community meet. Local cafés and restaurants give the village a welcoming feel, and there’s a strong sense of neighbourhood. It’s not uncommon to see people greeting each other by name.

Melkbosstrand is also part of a protected nature area. The dunes and surrounding fynbos support wildlife and birdlife, making it a good spot for nature lovers and photographers. On clear days, you can see Table Mountain in the distance, rising above the ocean.

While quieter than some of Cape Town’s bigger beach spots, Melkbosstrand offers space, views, and calm. It’s the kind of place where you slow down, breathe deeper, and enjoy the simpler things—like a sunset walk or a fresh catch from the sea.
